Jagodić Castle

Jagodić Castle, although closer to Konak on the road to Vršac, is formally located in the territory of the village Boka. It was built on the edge of a forest, notable for its rare preserved group of nettle trees that continue into an English park and are a protected plant species. The castle was built in 1835 and owned by Petar Jagodić, a prominent member of the family, who kept it until nationalization after World War II.

The Jagodić family was a distinguished noble family, contributing to the Serbian community in Vojvodina, and were significant members of Matica Srpska. The family built their residence far from settlements, in the peaceful forest of the Banat plains, in line with contemporary Austrian, Russian, British, and German trends. The castle belongs to the type of rural castles and is surrounded by an English park with both common and exotic plant species. The park in front of the castle follows the pattern of French formal gardens.

The building is elongated, rectangular, and perfectly symmetrical. Two lateral risalits resemble towers. The axis of symmetry includes two entrance verandas and a terrace veranda supported by four Corinthian columns. Windows also feature Corinthian elements. The design is simple and harmonious, with rhythmically spaced windows, typical of the neoclassical style, with some Romantic elements.

After nationalization, the castle was used as the administrative building of the “Trudbenik” agricultural complex, which altered the interior while largely preserving the exterior. Restoration work began in 2007; today the building is in good condition but not open to visitors.
